For most of its history (up to independence) the colony was known by the name of its present capital, Santo Domingo.
At present, it is one of the few countries in the world with a demonym-based name (as the Czech Republic, et al).
For example, the French Republic is usually known as France, but the Dominican Republic has no such equivalent — although the name "Quisqueya" is used sometimes.
